City Facts

Mainz, Mayence, Magenza, Moguntia, Mongontiacum. No matter how you say it, the name brings a smile to your face. And each of Mainz‘s many facets, over the course of three millennia, reflect a positive combination of trade, learning, and location. Unique to this is the Mainzer mind-set and character, all underlined by certain joie-de-vivre, and not just only during Carneval.

Mainz sits directly on the Rhine, midway between Basel, Switzerland, and the Dutch border, comfortably facing the Taunus Mountains‘ vista to the northeast, in the shadow of a gentle plateau which rises to the west.  The town has a distinct Mediterranean air, a legacy of the Italian, Croatian, French, Spanish, Greek and Syrian troops who made up the 20,000-man standing Roman garrison in Mainz for close to 500 years.  Mainz is protected from buffeting winds, and reaps the benefits a one of Germany’s most mild climates. A perfect place for cultivation of the vine since antiquity up until today… viticulture being one of the earliest hallmarks of civilization.

Airports

FRA - Frankfurt-Main

Ground Transportation

From the Airport:

Mainz is located along the banks of the Rhine river, and is frequently serviced by Deutsche Bahn, with direct service from FRA airport to the Mainz city center.

Trains depart every 30 minutes from the regional train station at airport FRA.  Take line "S8" that usually departs from platform 3. The destination station is "Mainz Südbahnhof" ("Mainz southern station").  It's a 25 minute trip and another 5 minute walk to the hotel. For more information, visit the Deutsche Bahn website.

About the town:

The best way to discover any city is by foot. Mainz is no exception. Most of the inner city, extending from the Main Rail Station in the west to the Rhine in the east, and from the rail bridge over the Rhine in the south to the autobahn connecting bridge north of the industrial waterfront in the north encompasses about 15 square kilometers. The Old Town, the “Rhine Riviera,” most of the prominent churches, the shopping district, and various residential areas as well as important Roman ruins and the museums all are within this section.  Street cars and buses cover longer distances cheaply and effectively. While there are many garages and some on-street metered parking during the weekdays, public transportation is dependable and economical.
