City Facts
Perhaps one of the most beautiful
cities in the world, Rome is exhilarating to both the first-time
visitor and the seasoned traveler. Come revel in its majestic antiquity,
lovely piazzas and thrilling street life.
Rome's 2,700 years of history are laid
open with every step. Ancient Rome rubs shoulders with the medieval,
the modern runs into the Renaissance, and the result is like nothing
so much as an open-air museum, a city that glories in its glories
and is a monument to itself. Ancient Romans, Vandals, Popes and
the Borgias, Michelangelo and Bernini, Napoléon, and Mussolini all
left their physical, cultural, and spiritual marks on the city.
Airports
Most international
flights and all domestic flights arrive at Aeroporto Leonardo da
Vinci (FCO),
also known as Fiumicino. (30 km/19
mi southwest of Rome, PHONE: 06/6595-3640, www.adr.it)
Ground Transportation
From the Airport:
By Shuttle Bus
Airport Connection Services (PHONE:
06/338-3221) operates an "airport shuttle" service by private car
that will pick you up at your hotel and take you to Fiumicino for
a set fee of EUR17, with no extra for baggage and major credit cards
accepted. You must book one day in advance, and a minimum of two
passengers is required. (If you're alone, you make your request
and then call back later to confirm that a second party has booked
and the car will make the trip.) The shuttle runs from 7 AM to 7
PM.
By Train
To reach downtown Rome from Fiumicino
Airport, you have a choice of two trains. Ask at the airport (at
APT or train information counters) which takes you closest to your
hotel. The nonstop Airport-Termini express (marked "FS" and run
by the state railway) takes you directly to Track 22 at Stazione
Termini, Rome's main train station, which is well served by taxis
and is the hub of Metro and bus lines. The ride to Termini takes
30 minutes; departures are hourly, beginning at 7:50 AM from the
airport, with a final departure at 10:05 PM. Tickets cost EUR7.75.
About the town:
Rome's integrated Metrebus transportation
system includes buses and trams (ATAC), Metro and suburban trains
and buses (COTRAL), and some other suburban trains run by the state
railways (FS). A ticket valid for 75 minutes on any combination
of buses and trams and one entrance to the Metro costs EUR.77. You
are supposed to date-stamp your ticket when you board the first
vehicle, stamping it again when boarding for the last time within
75 minutes (the important thing is to stamp it the first time).
